Federal and State Firearm Prohibitions – Part One / 26 March 2013

Presenters: Pete Helein, Chief of the Appleton Police Department and Millicent Shaw Phipps, Managing Attorney for the National Center on Protection Orders and Full Faith and Credit (NCPOFFC).

Content: Firearms in the hands of batterers pose a significant threat to law enforcement, survivors and the community. There are currently federal laws that prohibit certain people from purchasing and possessing weapons.  Many states have enacted similar legislation. This webinar will explore both federal and state gun prohibitions related to domestic violence, sexual assault, dating violence and stalking. The primary focus will be on the federal statutes, their applicability and relation to state firearm laws related to domestic violence.

Note: This is the first webinar in a 2 part series addressing firearms. 

Goals and Objectives:
  • Recognize the dangers to officers, survivors and the community posed by firearms in the hands of batterers.
  • Understand federal and state firearm laws
  • Identify the relationship between state and federal firearm laws and how they are enforced.
