Presenters: Daniel Saunders, Ph.D., M.S.S.W., is a Professor at the University of Michigan’s School of Social Work where his research, teaching, and service focus on the prevention of intimate partner violence and Gabrielle Davis, J. D. is an attorney with the Battered Women’s Justice Project.

Description: Dr. Saunders will describe the results from a survey of 1,187 judges, child custody evaluators, private attorneys, legal aid attorneys, and domestic abuse program workers about custody evaluations. He will focus on the beliefs, background and training of custody evaluators that are associated with various custody-visitation recommendations. Attorney Davis will suggest the implications of this study for guiding attorneys and judges in both the selection of evaluators and selecting the questions for evaluation. Strategies for training of evaluators and other professionals will be considered. Refinements to evaluator guidelines to enhance the validity of evaluator reports will be discussed.
