The Office on Violence Against Women and the National Center on Protection Orders and Full Faith & Credit (NCPOFFC), a project of the Battered Women’s Justice Project (BWJP), invite you to a two and an half day training for attorneys and advocates who provide survivor-centered advocacy and representation to victims of intimate partner violence. The goal of the institute is to provide participants with information and resources to enhance their advocacy and trial skills.
INSTITUTE FORMAT & TOPICS
Participants will examine the roles of the advocate and the attorney in working with victims of intimate partner violence. Institute topics will include full faith and credit and other issues relevant to issuance and enforcement of protection orders and inter-jurisdictional custody and firearm prohibitions. Through the use of scenarios, demonstrations, interactive discussion, role-play, and mock hearings, participants will enhance their advocacy and trial skills.
As a result of this training, participants will be better able to:
- Provide survivor-centered advocacy and representation to victims of intimate partner violence within ethical standards.
- Apply advocacy and trial skills to assist survivors seeking protection orders.
- Tailor legal representation and advocacy to meet each victim’s individual needs and enhance survivor safety.
- Recognize laws that impact people seeking protection orders and tailor practice and advocacy to respond appropriately.
