Context!! What do we mean by that? This conference will explore the various contexts in which violence occurs. Is it all the same? Is it battering or something else? What should your response be?
Both victims and perpetrators of intimate partner violence may find themselves enmeshed in legal systems where advocates can make a difference. What are the roles an advocate can play when victims are arrested or when their assailants are charged? How do outcomes in criminal and Protection Order courts impact custody in family court?
It is important for all advocates to understand how different courts operate, where they intersect, identify potential benefits and risks inherent in any system intervention, and the impact of these processes on the lived experiences of victims.
Learning Objectives
As a result of this conference, advocates will be better able to:
- Identify and explore the contexts in which violence occurs in intimate relationships.
- Advocate for the articulated and holistic needs of individual victims involved with multiple institutional responses.
- Assess the risks and benefits inherent in the criminal justice response depending on each victim’s life circumstances.
- Prepare victims for the differing assumptions and views of domestic violence by Child Protective Services, criminal and family courts.
- Identify the differential impact of class, race, and gender in each system.
